In Winners, competition is everything—both good and bad. The real world isn't always kind to those willing to give their all to win. Many barriers exist: our past wins and defeats, our sense of self, and our ability to face winning rather than being comfortable in defeat. (That's a big one.) We must endure days, weeks, and months of training and practice to be the best. We also need to block out everything and everyone else to concentrate exclusively on the competition ahead.

The Struggles of Kate and Elise

In Winners, Kate crashes when she lets a little fear from a Facebook post get to her. She is concentrating, but not enough to hold it together. For her part, Elise almost leaves the international violin competition in Lucerne due to self-doubt. The novel traces their growth and increasing mental strength as they strive to become winners. Sure, they were good as they were. But they weren't great until they mastered their insecurities and could block everything—every single thing—out of their minds, focusing solely on the course or the music ahead of them.

The Mental Preparation for Competition

One of my goals in writing Winners was to show that competition and the preparation for it require the same mental focus, regardless of the field. Here, Kate is a World Cup skier, and Elise is a world-class violinist. They each face demons that hold back their ability to win until they master the concentration and self-confidence to play full out, to ski full out, and not let anything get to them.

A great deal of research has been conducted on competitors, revealing that the most successful ones possess what is called a growth mindset. This means they are willing to continually test themselves and grow rather than accept their current performance level. Elise experiences growth early in the book when Pete suggests she command the stage in a way that is new to her. Suddenly, she performs at her peak. Thus, competition isn't merely about reaching a certain level and being content. It is about striving for a personal best every day, every race, and improving from the day before.

Embracing the Journey

My hope with Winners is to share that sense of competition as a means of continuously striving for your personal best. It is about outperforming what you did yesterday and not being afraid of the process. It isn't easy, but as both Kate and Elise prove, it works.

The Power of Resilience

Resilience is a crucial element in the journey of competition. Both Kate and Elise encounter setbacks that challenge their resolve. They learn that resilience isn't just about bouncing back; it's about growing stronger through adversity. This theme resonates deeply with readers, as we all face our own challenges in life.

Finding Support in Competition

Support systems play a vital role in the lives of competitors. Kate and Elise find strength in their friendships and mentors. These relationships help them navigate their fears and insecurities. The importance of community cannot be overstated. We thrive when we uplift each other, and this is a central message in Winners.

The Emotional Journey

The emotional journey of competition is profound. It is not just about winning or losing; it is about the experiences that shape us. Kate and Elise learn to embrace their emotions, using them as fuel for their performance. This emotional depth adds richness to the narrative, making it relatable and engaging.

Conclusion: The Path to Greatness

In conclusion, Winners is more than just a story about competition. It is a celebration of growth, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence. Through Kate and Elise, I hope to inspire readers to embrace their own journeys, to face their fears, and to strive for their personal best. Remember, the path to greatness is not a straight line; it is filled with twists and turns, but every step is worth it.

In the end, we all have the potential to be winners in our own lives. Let's embrace the competition, support one another, and strive for greatness together.
